My entry point was M83. A score that was oceanic and synth-driven for a post-apocalyptic science fiction film was a pairing that did not need a trailer to sell itself. And then Tom Cruise. And then Morgan Freeman walks in. And then Jaime Lannister. At some point, you cease to question the casting and allow the film to envelop you. It only clicked when the credits revealed Joseph Kosinski's name. Suddenly everything made sense. You can draw a clean line from Jack Harper chasing drones across a depopulated Earth to Maverick threading a canyon at Mach speed. Oblivion, in hindsight, was a rehearsal. Not the science fiction film it occasionally pretends to be. But as a spectacular, beautifully dressed action film with one of the better scores of the decade, it absolutely delivers. Gorgeous cinematography, immersive set pieces, seamless CGI. Haunting, evocative soundtrack. There's plenty of action, but it reaches for more- and attains it.
